| Nematodes can destroy sugar beet crops resulting in very low yields if left untreated. For years, Weld Laboratories offered nematode cyst counts which gave the grower and the crop consultant an idea if treatment was needed. This method, while helpful, was not completely reliable because it did not take into consideration viability of the nematode cysts. In 1999 we began offering nematode egg counts which is a much more reliable method.
In this method, the nematode cysts are isolated and then opened using a tissue grinder. The eggs are then counted under high-power magnification. The results are reported as eggs per gram of soil.
